One of the easiest ways to make copy sound good and still fail is to write for “everyone.”
When
you’re writing for everyone, you usually end up saying very little to anyone.
Before
writing a headline, landing page, product description, or email, I think it
helps to spend a few minutes asking, "Who am I actually talking to?"
Not
just their age or job title.
What
are they trying to do? What’s frustrating them? What do they care about? What
words would they naturally use to describe the problem?
For
example, imagine you’re writing copy for a project-management app.
You
could write:
“An
innovative all-in-one solution designed to streamline workflow management and
improve team productivity.”
Nothing
is technically wrong with it. But it could be describing dozens of software
products.
Now
imagine the audience is a small agency owner who has projects scattered across
emails, WhatsApp messages and spreadsheets.
The
copy might say:
“Stop
searching through five different places to find out what your team is working
on.”
That
feels different.
The
product hasn’t changed. The audience has.
The
second version starts with a situation the reader actually recognizes.
I
learned this gradually when working on different kinds of writing. The more
specific the audience became in my mind, the easier the writing became. I
didn't have to keep searching for impressive words. I already knew what problem
I was trying to address.
The
same thing happens with advertising.
A
skincare brand speaking to teenagers worried about acne will probably use
different language from a brand selling anti-aging products to women in their
50s.
A
financial service aimed at first-time investors shouldn’t sound like it’s
speaking to someone who has been investing for twenty years.
Even
a call to action can change depending on the audience.
“Start
investing” feels different
from “See how your first $500 could be invested.”
Good
copy begins before you write the first sentence.
It
begins with understanding the person who is supposed to read it.
When
you know that person well enough, you can choose the right examples, the right
language, the right objections to address, and sometimes even what not
to say.
That
makes writing much easier.
And
usually, much more useful.

WhatsApp messages
Product
Advertising
Acne
“Start investing”
