Powerful words aren't the only thing that give birth to good persuasive copy.
It's
all about understanding how people think, feel, decide and act.
Readers
don't purchase just because a product has been written about well.
They
buy when there's a message that resonates with something already happening in
their minds:
“This
is just what I needed.”
“As a person like me, I believe in this.”
“I don't want to miss this opportunity.”
“He/she seems to know what he/she is talking about.”
That's
where psychology comes into writing copy.
A
few of the oldest ideas regarding persuasion are:
Social
Proof — People tend to
follow the crowd when making decisions.
Authority — Expertise and credibility can increase
the trustworthiness of a message.
Reciprocity — If you give something of value first,
people are more willing to give something back.
Scarcity — If an offer is authentic and there is a
genuine need for it, it can be perceived as more valuable.
Commitment
& Consistency — Small
commitments can influence future behaviour.
Liking — People tend to be more open to messages
from people or brands they feel a connection with.
These
are among the principles discussed by social psychologist Robert Cialdini in
his book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.
However,
there is an important thing to learn for copywriters:
Manipulating
people is not the right use of psychology.
Persuasive
copy doesn't need tricks to convince the reader.
It
should help the reader understand:
What
is the issue that needs to be addressed?
Why does it matter?
How can this problem be solved?
Why should I believe this person or brand?
What should I do now?
A
professional copywriter is not someone who asks:
“What's
a way of phrasing this that will sound convincing?”
He
asks:
“What
does my reader need to understand or believe before they are ready to take
action?”
That's
what works psychologically when it comes to persuasive copy.
Good
writing communicates.
Persuasive writing moves people toward a choice.
The
goal is to transform ideas and insights into compelling stories that drive
action, while exploring different content styles for different platforms and
developing a deeper understanding of the psychology behind persuading audiences
to take action.

Social
Proof —
Authority
Reciprocity
Scarcity
Commitment
& Consistency —
Liking
Influence:
The Psychology of Persuasion
Persuasive
Persuasive
Persuasive writing
